At ARB Digital, it’s not always business; sometimes it’s also personal. The ability to use printing technology to preserve and share family treasures is a powerful tool that we don’t take lightly. To illustrate (literally), we took on the project of printing and mounting an original painting made by a dynamic, multi-talented and fearless woman — also known as Alvaro’s maternal grandmother, Beatriz de Borregales.
Printed with archival inks on high quality canvas, this giclée is allowed to completely dry over a couple of days before applying a satin coating that seals in the ink while protecting it from dust, UV rays and fading over time. It also provides a finished look without being too glossy. Using the full gamut of the printer lends the giclée a pop of color that we imagine is similar to the original vibrancy of the work when it was first done in 1974.
Beatriz was already in her sixties when she decided to take up oil painting. A woman of many talents, she confidently learned a wide breadth of skills and employed them for her family in the roles of electrician, cook, nurse, plumber, carpenter and even mechanic! Among her many accomplishments Alvaro proudly shares, "She learned to drive in her forties and never stopped. She drove everywhere."
Though she formally trained to become a teacher, she chose instead to be a lifelong learner. In her brief stint as a painter, she created numerous works. This one depicts the home in Rio Caribe, Venezuela, where her son-in-law's mother grew up. She left this image of the Mendez House, Alvaro's paternal grandparents' home to Alvaro upon her passing at 96.
Rich hues of brown, ochre, green and blue, applied with Impressionist brushstrokes revealing the character of the century-old building, was recreated in 8x10 giclée prints. These will be given to Alvaro’s siblings, allowing them to share a family heirloom and the legacy of a Renaissance woman who lived a full life and explored all that it had to offer.
